I teach 6th grade Reading and work closely with the Writing teacher (why they're separated is a question for another day). But I agree with what you wrote. Worksheets don't stimulate any higher-level thinking skills. They're not all bad, but they have limited good. Use a worksheet to reinforce a skill and then have the student put it into practice in a way that makes sense and shows their understanding.
